Conferences

Scientific conferences are an excellent way for academics to present and discuss current research results – whether it be research results from a doctoral thesis, habilitation treatise, or peer-reviewed paper. Therefore, alongside opportunities for publication, scientific conferences and symposia present an essential communication tool in science and academia.

Once a scientist or someone interested in research has registered for taking an active role in a scientific conference, they will be asked in the so-called call for papers to write up their latest research results within the scope of a scientific paper and submit them. In most cases such conference papers will be subjected to a peer review process. In addition, the author of the conference paper will also be asked to prepare an abstract and poster in an effort to present their scientific research results in a compact format. The speaker’s abstract will be published in advance in the conference program brochure. During the conference, the researcher will then present their research findings in a brief matter-of-fact presentation, which typically should not take more than thirty minutes and which features the poster as a presentation aid alongside a PowerPoint presentation. Furthermore, the posters of all conference participants can be presented after the conclusion of the conference in a poster session where the researchers answer questions from the conference participants within the scope of a discussion. Such poster sessions may be conducted both at a conventional conference and digitally. After the conference’s conclusion the submitted conference papers will be published in a conference proceeding.

Conferences serve as a valuable channel for exchanging information among researchers, the significance of which is undisputed: They provide the opportunity to meet people, exchange and develop ideas, establish collaborations, collect suggestions on their work, and be inspired. Such conferences may occur in different forms and formats. At the Open Institute, in addition to online conferences, there are face-to-face conferences as well. The latter are organized in such a way that each participant has the opportunity to give their statement, present their findings, and discuss the respective research results in exchange with their scientific colleagues. Ultimately, scientific conferences at the Open Institute are a perfect place to meet various researchers and experts from all over the world, learn new perspectives, and expand one‘s personal network.
